Maybe many people have heard about this guy. Indeed I learned about him few weeks ago through sermon. There was his sentence that amazed me, and pushes me to learn about his life.
Arthur Ashe is an African American. He was born at July 10, 1943 and died at February 6, 1993.He has been known for his achievements as a professional tennis player and for his efforts to further social causes. He has won three Grand Slam Titles during his career, putting him among the best ever from the US. He also founded the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS. Around year 1979, Ashe suffered a heart attack. He underwent two bypass surgeries, and infected by HIV during the blood translation from his second surgery. (1)
Some of his acquaintances ask him, did he angry with God because of his disease. His answer makes me amazed. He answered, “If I were to say, “God, why me?” about the bad things, then I should have said, “God, why me?” about the good things that happened in my life.” Yeah, sometimes we, especially I, myself, forget to thank God during our blissful times. We used to forget that everything goods are come from God, and never ask why it should us whom get the profit or those blessing. But during the hardest times in our lives, sometimes we made a slip, asking God why me whom must through this situation. His words teach me to be thankful, and strengthen me. It reminds me that God never leaves us through the good and bad things. Everything is under His control. Even we made a great mistake; He can turn it out into beautiful things. It doesn’t matter about the good things or bad things happened to us, but it’s about the process, how we react to it. Geez..Thanks God for create such a human being like Arthur Ashe, so I learn many things from Him, even I never be acquainted with him directly.
These are some Arthur Ashe quotes that I like:
“I keep sailing on in this middle passage. I am sailing into the wind and the dark. But I am doing my best to keep my boat steady and my sails full.”
“One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.”
“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”
“Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.”
“Trust has to be earned, and should come only after the passage of time.”
“You’ve got to get to the stage in life where going for it is more important than winning or losing.”
